HANDLING DIFFICULT TEAM MEMBERS & GETTING THE BEST OUT OF THEM
by Yvonne | Apr 19, 2023 | Business
Difficult team members ca be a huge pain and sap your energy. But with the right techniques, you can turn them into your greatest assets.
Here are my best strategies on how to deal with difficult team members.
First of all you have to "Address the Situation Head On". Ignoring it doesn't make it go away.
Then you must "Stay Calm and Professional". Now at times that can be challenging, do your prep and know all the research first. You're very clear on what you want to say. That will also help you stay calm and professional.
Number three is about "Being Very Clear on What Your Expectations Are" and clearly articulating them. It kind of links itself with the addressing the situation head on. You must have a clear plan in place for what your outcomes are and what you want to say.
Please "Avoid Personal Attacks". Keep it professional, even if you're receiving personal attacks. Make sure you ask them to stop and don't retaliate back.
The next step is a really important one, and that's "Setting a Deadline for the Behavior to Change". This will go well with your action plan or guidelines as to what you want moving forward. But you need to have clear expectations, so that there is a goal post for them to achieve it on. Which will also support you if it doesn't go to plan.
And the final one is "Document Everything That Happens". Make a file note, if it's an action plan. You must have things documented and then get them to confirm that, that was what was spoken about with their action plan etc. And again file that just in case. And I hope you don't, but just in case you need it.
Now it can be difficult, one of the key things I talk with a lot of managers and leaders is you need to "Manage your Own Emotions". Figure out what the triggers are, before you go into these conversations. And that's why I say you've got to address it head-on. If you avoid it, it only fasters and becomes worse. But make sure that you've done your own research. You're clear with what you want to achieve. Go in with good intentions. And know that you've done the work that therefore that's going to support you with getting a good outcome. But following up with that person. Keeping a really "Good Path of Communication with them". Or hopefully help you resolve that. And therefore you can really elevate the culture of being high performance, as well as "A Culture that's Good for Everyone to Be Part Of".
Many thanks
